First day in the mountains

A lovely ride of about 75km with about 1300m of climbing. This day's ride was always going to be a test of legs or batteries! The lowlights: a small section of the route that started as tarmac, then gravel, then grass, then brambles... we had to walk cross country through a field of lucerne to get back on a usable road. Oh well.

The highlights: the scenery, the use of 10km of closed road so there were no cars, but the surface was rough in places, good riding though.

Why the road was closed.

This road used to be the highway but has been replaced by the E45 autostrada.

There were two climbs and we stopped at a restaurant near the top of the second one to recharge ourselves and to top up the bike batteries. Easy.

We got into Sansepolcro mid afternoon, had lots of refreshments and watched the parade of the local band which is a feature of the weekend's festivities.
