The perils of modern air travel

The trip (for Kathleen and Patrick) started out inauspiciously...

Our flight from Canberra to Doha got delayed 16 hours. This meant an unscheduled overnight stay for me in Sydney and then instead of Sydney-Doha-Rome it turned into Sydney-Doha-Istanbul-Rome so one extra flight and a few extra queues. I must say though that it allowed me to see Kosovo and Montenegro which I had not seen. Some impressive mountains!
It also meant missing a night in Rome and a crowded schedule when we arrived to pick up our bikes and catch the train to Bologna. It was hot, rainy and humid in Rome which added to the discomfort. Oh well. At least the people at Topbike Rentals  were fantastic and friendly. Our bikes were kitted out, we repacked (leaving some luggage with them) and it was an easy ride to Termini. The train was on time, actually a little early! The train trip took us up past Lago di Trasimino and Cortona on the hill.
By the time we got to Bologna it was 8pm and we were hot, sweaty, tired and ready for bed. The last bit of indignity was the declaration of a snap strike by Trenitalia workers, derailling (intended) our plans for the next day. It was travel before 8am or not at all! So I did the minimum... showering, washing and repacking then collapsed into bed.
